How We Make Flat Welding Tables at Umetalli

Our Core Values — Transparency and Quality

At Umetalli, we're completely open about how we make our welding tables. We want you to know how much care goes into each table. Today, we'll explain how we create flat welding tables at Umetalli and, more importantly, why we've chosen this specific manufacturing approach.

What Does a "Flat" Table Really Mean?

"Flatness" is a relative concept that varies depending on what the surface is used for. Different tasks require different levels of flatness:

  • If you need a simple shelf for storing items, small irregularities don't matter
  • For a dining table, you need a flatter surface so it doesn't wobble
  • Precision parts used in mechanical engineering and aerospace that operate at high speeds require manufacturing surfaces with no more than 0.1 mm variation per meter

Here are the acceptable flatness deviations in different cases:

  • Regular shelf: up to 3 mm per meter (up to 1 cm on a 3-meter shelf)
  • Dining table: up to 2 mm per meter (about 4 mm on a 2-meter table)
  • Precision parts: no more than 0.1 mm per meter

Important! It's worth noting that achieving flatness of 0.7 mm per meter is extremely difficult with DIY welding table kits. Building a welding table with such precision in a garage or workshop is practically impossible – there are many subtle details involved, and specialized equipment and professional tools are required to achieve the desired results. That's why we recommend purchasing ready-made tables assembled with professional equipment.

How We Balance Price and Quality

At Umetalli, we strive to make tables that are sufficiently flat without being too expensive. The more precise a table needs to be, the more manufacturing steps are required, which increases the price. We produce different models of tables – from simple ones for home craftsmen to professional versions for manufacturing operations. On all our tables, we guarantee precision of 0.5-0.7 mm per meter of surface.

How We Create Our Welding Tables

A good welding table should be sturdy, not too heavy, and have a flat surface. Here's how we make our tables:

Umetalli
  1. We cut parts on a precise laser machine
  2. We inspect each part
  3. We secure the table surface to a flat base

Any steel sheet has some curvature. We attach it to a flat base – this is the first step toward creating a flat surface. Then we install intersecting reinforcement ribs that make the table stronger and help maintain flatness. All parts are cut with precision to fractions of a millimeter, so they fit together perfectly.

Using Laser Welding

Unlike traditional arc welding, we use modern laser welding for critical joints. This gives us several key advantages:

  • Minimal heat-affected zone – less metal deformation during welding
  • High weld seam precision – up to 0.1 mm
  • No spatter or slag
  • Less stress in the metal, which preserves surface flatness

During welding, we make eight welds on each 25×25 cm section. On a table measuring 100×150 cm, this results in many welding points, making the structure very strong. The result is a table so flat that when you place a construction level on its surface, you can't see even the smallest gap.

Benefits of Our Manufacturing Method

Our approach has several advantages:

  • Requires less material than cast or milled tables
  • Weighs about half as much as a milled table of the same size
  • Can be mounted on wheels while maintaining high load capacity
  • Almost as flat as a milled table, but costs much less
  • Laser welding ensures the structure maintains its geometry
  • Less residual stress in the metal – the table maintains its original flatness longer
  • No welding deformations typical of conventional welding

Conclusion

We don't promise that our tables are perfectly flat across the entire surface because we don't use expensive mechanical processing. However, in most cases, our welding tables are far better than what our customers have used before. This is confirmed by clients from various sectors – from government institutions to private enterprises throughout Europe. For our tables, we select only high-quality components. We take our work seriously and stand behind the quality of every welding table that leaves our facility. The entire Umetalli team takes pride in knowing that our tables help people create amazing things!
